Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Manchester United manager 14 months after his arrival at Old Trafford, the club confirmed on Monday.
The decision was made early Monday, following what sources describe as an irreversible collapse in internal relations.
According to sports journalist David Oistein, United’s administration, led by CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, decided to end Amorim’s stay due to rising problems behind the scenes.
Former United player Darren Fletcher, who presently coaches the club’s Under-18s, is slated to serve as interim manager. His first job would be Wednesday night’s away game against Burnley, with the club hoping to make a permanent appointment in the summer.
Amorim’s departure follows a difficult weekend in which he clashed with the media before and after Sunday’s draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.
In his pre-match press conference, the Portuguese coach appeared frustrated, refused to answer questions concerning transfers and whether he had been forced to change his tactical philosophy. Since joining at Old Trafford last year, Amorim has faced criticism for what some see as a rigorous approach on the football.
Following the Leeds match, Amorim fueled rumors by stating that he joined United to serve as a manager rather than a head coach. He also questioned his long-term prospects, implying that he might leave once his contract expired.
According to Ornstein, Amorim’s contract, signed when he joined United from Sporting CP in November 2024, is valid until 2027, with an option for an extra year. Crucially, there is no reduced-exit clause in the agreement, which means United will have to pay out the whole amount.
Despite the upheaval, United remain solidly in contention for European qualification. They are now sixth in the Premier League, tied with Chelsea in fifth and just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
