The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended the implementation of the tinted glass permit regulation in compliance with a court decision.
The policy’s enforcement was slated to begin on January 2, 2026.
However, Benjamin Hundeyin, the force’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Thursday that the policy has been halted awaiting the hearing and resolution of the substantive action or the order’s cancellation.
In December 2025, the Delta State High Court ordered an ex parte injunction preventing the NPF from enforcing the tinted glass permit requirement countrywide.
Israel Joe filed the lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police (first defendant), the National Police Force (second defendant), and the Delta Police Commissioner (third defendant).
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the police have disagreed on how the regulation should be enforced.
On December 15, 2024, police declared that enforcement of the tinted glass permit regulation will start on January 2, 2026, citing an increase in vehicle-related crimes.
In response to the development, the NBA accused the police of violating a court order limiting the policy’s execution.
The NBA claimed the police declaration “amounts to executive recklessness” and painted the police leadership as “lacking in respect for the court, the rule of law, and due process of law”.
In response to the NBA, the police stated that there was no court ruling declaring the policy illegal or permanently preventing the officers from carrying out their statutory duties.
Hundeyin stated that the police had been served with an interim court injunction preventing them from enforcing the policy.
The force spokeswoman said that the police had filed an appearance in the case and requested that the ruling be vacated.
He stated that the matter had been delayed until January 20 for additional proceedings.
“In line with constitutional obligations and respect for judicial authority, the Nigeria Police Force has entered an appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order,” the statement reads.
“The court has adjourned the case to 20th January 2026 for further proceedings.
“Accordingly, and strictly in compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, affirms that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the rule of law while discharging its primary mandate of protecting lives and property.
“The Force will continue to deploy lawful, intelligence-driven strategies to address security challenges and safeguard public safety across the country.”
