NNPC Limited says it has contained a reported breach on a section of the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) in South West Warri, Delta State, following an incident disclosed on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
In an update issued on Saturday, the company said coordinated containment actions had been completed and that the affected pipeline sections were isolated to prevent further impact. The ELPS is a critical gas transportation corridor supplying power plants and industrial users in Lagos and parts of the South West.
“Coordinated containment measures have been successfully executed, ensuring the safety of host communities, personnel, and the environment,” NNPC Limited said in the statement.
It added that
“All relevant pipeline sections have been safely and securely isolated.”
The company said a joint preliminary inspection had been carried out at the site of the breach by technical teams from NNPC Limited, the Nigeria Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and maintenance contractors. The outcome of the inspection, including the cause of the breach and timelines for full restoration, was not disclosed in the update.
NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), which operates the network, has activated its Business Continuity Plan to manage potential disruptions arising from the incident. According to the statement, the plan is aimed at…
“managing the impact on all affected stakeholders, including shippers and suppliers.”
Pipeline breaches on Nigeria’s gas and crude oil networks have historically raised concerns around supply reliability, environmental risks, and community safety. The Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System, in particular, plays a central role in delivering gas from the Niger Delta to major demand centres, making any disruption potentially significant for electricity generation and industrial activity.
While NNPC did not indicate whether gas supply had been curtailed, the activation of a continuity plan suggests measures are in place to mitigate knock-on effects for customers along the value chain.
The company said it was maintaining engagement with local communities and government authorities as response efforts continue.
“NNPC Ltd continues to maintain open communication with host communities, state authorities, and other critical stakeholders,” the statement said, adding that the company “remains committed to the safety of its host communities, the protection of the environment, and the reliability of its operations across all assets.”
NNPC did not announce a completion date for repairs or provide details on compensation, if any, for affected parties. Further updates are expected as investigations progress and remedial work advances.
