Anambra community comes under gunmen’s attack—many feared dead

On Sunday, fear and panic engulfed the Nawfia community in Anambra State‘s Njikoka Local Government Area following a fatal attack by unknown gunmen at the Fair (Afor) Market Junction.

An eyewitness said several people, mostly youths, were killed during the violence that occurred along the old Awka–Onitsha road. The scene was said to be littered with bodies, while signs of confrontation were visible in the area.

Some victims were killed, while others fled for safety.

According to one source,

“The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack; the attack has left our community shaken.”

Chief Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, condemned the attack, describing it as terrible and pointless.

According to Okoye, who issued a statement on the incident, the attack came as a deep shock, with several casualties reported. He said he has contacted the relevant security agencies and received confirmation that investigations are ongoing to track down the attackers.

He urged locals to remain calm, attentive and assist security personnel in working to restore normalcy.

He also extended sympathy to the victims’ families, reassuring them of the union’s support and commitment to saving lives and keeping the community peaceful.
