Kano set to launch drone patrols at borders

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced intentions to purchase drones and other logistics to improve surveillance and swift response operations in border communities vulnerable to bandit attacks

The governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, issued a statement on Wednesday detailing the development.

According to the statement, the governor made the announcement on Tuesday while reviewing the readiness of Joint Task Force (JTF) members at their three locations in Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas, where bandits recently carried out coordinated attacks.

The visit comes after months of rising insecurity along the Kano-Katsina border, where armed groups’ repeated invasions have put communities in fear and triggered increased multi-agency deployments.

Governor Yusuf urged people of affected communities to provide security officers with relevant information on bandit movements to assist prevent further attacks.

He further stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu responded positively when he briefed him on the developing crisis and asked federal assistance.

The governor directed the JTF to increase efforts to secure the release of kidnapped residents from Tsanyawa and Shanono.

“We are aware that they have been attacking innocent communities, especially here in Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas. Many innocent lives were taken away, and many innocent people were also sent to the bush. “We would secure drones and other logistics for surveillance and rapid response to protect inhabitants of the border areas.”

“I assured you that by God’s grace, those who were kidnapped will be brought back to their families.”

Yusuf told the troops that his visit was to assess the security situation, hold direct engagements with operatives and encourage them to give their best to the ongoing operations.

“This type of insecurity in Kano State is something new; it is something alien that has just been observed in the state, and the government is doing its best to address the situation with the cooperation of security agencies,” the governor added.

He also stated that his administration would grant necessary assistance to frontline security officers.

According to the statement, during the evaluation tour, the governor spoke with families of kidnapped victims and expressed condolences, assuring them that efforts to achieve their release would be strengthened.

Recent attacks in the two councils apparently resulted in the kidnapping of five to 10 people, with a woman slain in one of the incidents.

The announcement was issued by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at Government House Kano.
