Aminu Yusuf have been confirmed by the senate to serve as the National Population Commission (NPC) chairman alongside two commissioners.
Victor Umeh, a senator from Anambra Central and the head of the committee on national identity and national population, presented a report prior to the confirmation.
Umeh said the committee vetted the applicants when he presented the report on Tuesday.
“The nominees appeared before the committee for screening on Tuesday, the 14th of October, 2025,” he said.
“The committee did not receive any criminal complaints on any of the nominees. They are prepared for the job for which they have been nominated for.”
He named Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe state as commissioner, Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa state as chairman, and Aminu Yusuf from Niger state as chairman.
Umeh clarified that prior to the screening process, the committee required pertinent documents such as police records, curriculum vitae, certificates of code of conduct clearance, and DSS clearance.
Each nominee gave a presentation as part of the exercise, and then there was a Q&A period, he added.
“The nominees presented their vision, qualifications and experience, highlighting their suitability for the positions,” he said.
“The committee members critically analysed their documents, educational qualifications, mode of presentation, social skills, composure and competency.”
Umeh stated that the committee was pleased with the nominees’ eligibility.
The motion to consider the report was backed by Senator Tony Nwoye, who represents Anambra North.
The Senate then decided to consider the report as a committee of the whole.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the confirmation to a voice vote, and lawmakers unanimously approved their nominations.
“Accordingly, the appointments of Aminu Yusuf from Niger state as chairman, Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa state, and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe state as commissioners are hereby approved,” Akpabio said.
