World Athletics Championships: Tobi Amusan qualifies for 100m hurdles semi-final

Tobi Amusan cruised to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles heat at the ongoing current World Athletics Championship in Tokyo.

On Sunday, Amusan won the heat in 12.53 seconds, ahead of the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton and Italy’s Elena Carraro, who finished second and third.

The world record holder began her quest for gold in the hurdles race on a high note, dominating the track over the distance despite having the fifth-best reaction time to the starting gun.

Amusan has been seeded in Heat 2 of the semi-finals, where she will face the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser, the third-ranked 100m women’s hurdler. She is ranked seventh worldwide.

The top two competitors from each of the three heats will progress to the final, as will the two athletes with the best times from all three semi-finals.

In other championship news, Oyesade Olatoye did not advance to the final of the hammer throw event during Sunday morning’s session.

The US-born athlete, who transferred allegiance to Nigeria in 2019, threw 68.82m on her third attempt, up from 66.78m on her first throw.

The throw was eventually insufficient, as she finished 10th in category A of the qualification round, therefore ending her participation.

Amusan is Nigeria’s final female representative at the championships, following Olatoye’s elimination.
