World leaders, delegates, and senior UN officials have started to arrive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the Africa Climate Summit‘s second edition (ACS2).
The conference, which is scheduled for September 8–10, has as its theme “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development.”
Ahead of the COP30 negotiations in Brazil next year, heads of state, legislators, climate experts, and civil society organisations are anticipated to utilise the conference to establish a shared African stance.
The main topics of discussion will be how Africa can demonstrate its huge renewable energy potential, draw in climate funding, highlight domestic technologies, and reconcile pressing climate action with development priorities.
The inaugural meeting, held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2023, saw African leaders approve the Nairobi Declaration, which outlines the continent’s green growth and funding plan.
ACS2 is expected to expand on that foundation, with participants advocating for increased adaptation commitments, climate-resilient infrastructure, and new financing structures that avoid burdening African countries with unsustainable debt.
The meeting is also likely to result in the Addis Declaration, a joint statement articulating Africa’s climate priorities and requests to the global community.
