PDP Faces Backlash Over Adeleke’s Tinubu Endorsement

… Osun Governor’s Support For APC Sparks Party Tensions

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) faced internal turmoil after Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and the state chapter endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027.

The endorsement, announced during a PDP rally in Osogbo, prompted criticism from the party’s national leadership. PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, speaking in Abuja, described the move as a betrayal of party principles, directing Adeleke to clarify his stance.

The Osun PDP, backed by former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, defended the endorsement, citing Tinubu’s infrastructure projects in the South-West.

The party’s National Working Committee summoned Adeleke for a disciplinary hearing, with a warning of potential sanctions. PDP governors from Delta and Enugu distanced themselves from the endorsement, reaffirming their commitment to opposition unity.

The controversy has deepened divisions within the PDP, with some members accusing Adeleke of negotiating a second-term deal for himself.

The party leadership directed state chapters to reaffirm loyalty to the national agenda, with a focus on countering the APC.

The Osun chapter announced plans to hold town hall meetings to explain its position, while the national secretariat scheduled a National Executive Committee meeting for July 24 to address the crisis.

The endorsement has raised questions about PDP’s cohesion, particularly in the South-West, where it seeks to regain ground.

The situation underscores Nigeria’s fluid political alliances, with implications for the 2027 elections.
