Governors Demand Increased Revenue Allocation

State Leaders Push For 60% Share In Federation Account
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum demanded an increase in states’ revenue allocation to 60% from the Federation Account during a meeting in Abuja. The forum, chaired by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, argued that the current 26% allocation limits states’ ability to address infrastructure and welfare needs. The governors proposed amending the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission’s formula to reflect rising costs of governance. The meeting included representatives from all 36 states, who presented data showing declining federal transfers amid inflation. The forum directed its legal team to engage the National Assembly for constitutional amendments. The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Finance, acknowledged the demands but urged fiscal discipline at the state level. The governors highlighted disparities in revenue distribution, with oil-producing states like Delta and Rivers pushing for special considerations. The forum plans to meet with President Tinubu to finalize negotiations, with a target resolution by September. The demand responds to public pressure for improved services, as states struggle with education and healthcare funding. The governors also called for increased local government autonomy to enhance grassroots development. The initiative has sparked debates about fiscal federalism, with northern and southern governors presenting unified demands. The outcome could reshape Nigeria’s revenue-sharing framework, influencing governance and political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
