… Heavy Security Presence Fails to Deter Lawmaker’s Attempt to Resume Duties

Suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, accompanied by a group of supporters, in a bold bid to resume her legislative responsibilities despite an ongoing Senate suspension. The lawmaker, determined to return to her duties, cited a Federal High Court ruling that she claims nullified her suspension, prompting her to challenge the Senate’s stance.
Early Tuesday morning, security forces, including police, Department of State Services, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel, were deployed across the National Assembly premises to prevent Natasha’s entry. The heightened security measures led to rigorous checks at entry points, causing delays for staff and visitors. Despite the heavy presence of armed operatives, Natasha and her supporters, including prominent activist Aisha Yesufu, approached the complex on foot after her convoy was halted at the gate.
The situation grew tense as supporters chanted in solidarity, urging the senator to push forward. Natasha, backed by her legal team, insisted that the court’s decision granted her the right to resume her role as Kogi Central’s representative. However, Senate leadership, through spokesperson Senator Yemi Adaramodu, maintained that no binding court order mandates her immediate recall, describing the ruling as an advisory opinion. The standoff highlights ongoing friction between judicial authority and legislative processes, raising questions about democratic representation and compliance with court rulings.
