Monarch’s 65-year reign brought unity, development to Ijebuland, says president

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who passed away Sunday at 91, describing him as “a towering ruler who served with grace, dignity, and firm sense of duty.”
In a personally signed condolence message, the president noted the double grief of losing the revered monarch barely two weeks after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He highlighted Oba Adetona’s transformative 65-year reign, which began when the royal father ascended the throne at just 26 years old.
“Oba Adetona used his royal platform to promote unity and progress for over six decades,” President Tinubu stated, recalling the monarch’s steadfast leadership during national uncertainties. “Amid challenges, he remained a voice of reason and symbol of stability.”
The president particularly praised the late Awujale’s enduring legacies in public service, philanthropy, and education – including establishing a governance school at Olabisi Onabanjo University. He noted the traditional ruler’s reign brought notable development to Ijebu-Ode and surrounding communities through visionary leadership.
Reflecting on their personal relationship, Tinubu said: “I found his presence comforting, his wisdom enlightening, and his honesty deeply empowering.” He extended condolences to the Ogun State government led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, the royal family, and the entire Ijebu nation, praying for strength to uphold the monarch’s exemplary values.
The Awujale’s passing marks the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most influential traditional rulers, whose counsel was sought by successive governments since independence.
