Political Science Association urges parties to halt campaigning and focus on poverty, economy

The Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) has sounded an alarm: the race for the 2027 elections is pulling attention away from the country’s urgent problems.
In a statement, the group’s president, Professor Hassan Saliu, said intense political jostling has already begun. But no party, he noted, has presented clear plans to tackle poverty, unemployment, rising living costs, or Nigeria’s growing debt.
Global statistics paint a “grim picture” of Nigeria’s progress, the NPSA warned. Living standards keep falling, hurting Nigeria’s standing in the world. If this continues, the country faces even tougher times after 2027.
“The most pressing issue is how to change this narrative,” the statement read. “Politicians must stop campaigning now and focus on serving the people.”
The group urged leaders to prioritize citizens’ welfare and economic recovery over “intra-class squabbles.” They called for a shift in focus – from winning power to solving real problems affecting Nigerians every day.
“Two years before elections, this is an urgent call to Nigeria’s political class,” the NPSA declared. “Put the people first.”
